Conditions of chronic pelvic pain are often caused by tightness in the pelvic floor. As many as one in seven people suffer from chronic pelvic pain, often spending years trying to receive a proper explanation and diagnosis for their pain.
The pelvic floor muscles and fascia, the sling-like group of muscles that support the pelvic organs, can become tight or restricted for various reasons. In some instances, the restriction in the pelvic floor muscles is caused by poor posture, a fall, injury, surgery, or emotional trauma.
Stress can also cause people to clench the pelvic floor in a subconscious protectionary manner, leading to fascial restrictions in the pelvic floor fascia and muscles. These restrictions can be highly sensitive and painful, and when pressed can refer pain to other parts of the body.
Surprising places you can feel pain when your pelvic floor is restricted:
-Lower back pain
-issues with frequency of urination
– pain with sex
-prostatitis (for men)
– interstitial cystitis
-hip pain
-knee pain
-TMJ (the jaw clenches in response to the pelvic floor clenching, almost like a mirror, reflecting each other)
-Sciatica
The good news is that it is possible to release these fascial restrictions by using gentle pelvic floor stretches, practicing relaxing the pelvic floor and also receiving pelvic floor myofascial release by a trained pelvic floor myofascial release therapist.
Our Master Level Therapist, Nicole Russo, has been trained and practices pelvic floor myofascial release. Almost 35% of her clients see her specifically for pelvic floor myofascial release. She has taken over 150 hours of instruction with the John Barnes Pelvic Floor Seminars, as well as more than 1,500 hours of real life experience treating patients. She has seek remarkable changes in a person’s level of chronic pain by working on pelvic floor muscles, for both men and women. Many times, these clients have been unable to find relief from traditional therapies for their chronic pain and once they start pelvic floor release, find an immediate change.
What is a pelvic floor myofascial release session like?
A pelvic floor myofascial release session is very similar to a regular myofascial session. The big difference is that Nicole works internally on the fascial restrictions of the pelvis, either rectally, or vaginally. Lubrication is used, gloves are used and proper sanitary procedures are followed, as well as communication, patience, compassion and gentleness. She understands this area can hold a lot of pain, but also a lot of stress and emotions. She takes her time to evaluate the areas of restriction internally, and then with gentle pressure just like in regular myofascial release, she holds the area and waits for the fascia to melt under her hands. The client stays covered under the sheets and is instructed to breathe, and feel into the different sensations, and to soften and let go as they feel ready. When the session is over, Nicole leaves the room and provides wipes for the client to clean up, and then they get dressed and Nicole discusses the next steps with them.
If you feel that you are struggling with chronic pain that just isn’t going away, please consider trying an internal myofascial release session with Nicole.
